Clinical and mycological study of pityriasis versicolor
S Kanta, R Rani, J Chandra, DS Bimra
January-March 1986, 31(1):17-21
ABSTRACT: Clinical and mycological study of one hundred cases of pityriasis versicolor, confirmed by direct KOH technique was carried out at Government Medical College, Patiala, as no such study has been previously reported from the the State of Punjab. According to this study, 75.0 per cent cases were in the age group of 11.30 years and the sex ratio was approximately two males to one female. On clinical examination, the predominant sites of involvement were chest, back, neck, shoulders and abdomen. Culture was done in all the cases on neutral Sabouraud's dextrose agar and the culture was positive in only six cases. Additionally in thirty-five cases, the culture was also done on Sabouraud's dextrose agar layered with olive oil and the isolation rate increased to 17.0 per cent. These 100 cases were divided into four similar groups of twenty five cases each and were treated with different regimes as 20.0 per cent sodium thiosulphate, 20.0 per cent sodium thiosulphate plus miconazole nitrate, miconazole nitrate and tolnaftate. Out of these, 20.0 percent sodium thiosul. fat and miconazole nitrate combination was found to be most effective.

AS Prasad
January-March 1986, 31(1):7-11
ABSTRACT: 60 suspected cases of leprosy were studied. 12 case were bacteriologically positive. The remaining 48 cases were studied to evaluate the relative efficacy of commonly used clinical and laboratory methods of diagnosis. Diminution of sensation is the best criterion and results are comparable to the histopathological findings. Its limitations are the unpredictable information's received in cases of children and mentally retarded patients. Sweat test which was modified by the author and the histamine flare test were found to be very effective with 95 percent accuracy
