It gives me great pleasure to review this title 'Handbook of Urticaria' edited by Drs. Kiran V Godse, Abhishek De and Anant Patil. Although this has been labeled as 'handbook', it is a comprehensive text on urticaria and angioedema. It is not the volume but the content which decides about the quality of a book. This book is a perfect example of that. The beauty of this book is that it not only addresses the minute aspects of the disease but it represents a geographical diversity of its presentations, perspectives as the authors come from various parts of the world. Actually the book is an initiative of GALEN Urticaria Centres of Reference and Excellence (UCARE). Authors from UCARE centers all over the world have contributed chapters in this book.
Such a galaxy of experts in the field from across the world contributing in a book edited by Indian editors is a matter of pride for not only the editors but for all of us. Drs. Kiran Godse, Abhishek De and Anant Patil are to be thanked and congratulated for recognizing the need and rising to the challenge. The 'foreword' of the book has been penned by three internationally famous urtiacria specialists: Drs. Torsten Zuberbier, Marcus Maurer, and Ana Maria Gimeglobal. Dr. Kiran V Godse is global leader of Urticaria and he being the editor adds to the flavour of the book.
The book has addressed almost all areas of urticaria and angioedema starting from basic pathogenesis, immunological cascades involved, varied presentations, conventional treatment, urticaria in special groups, for example, elderly, children, pregnant and lactating mothers, future prospect of treatment with biologics, etc., patient education and counselling.
I am sure that the dermatologists in India and across the globe will find this book very rich, useful and original in content. This is a book to treasure, now and in the future.
