The hard copy of May-June 2016 issue has reached all of us with these much desired words on the cover "Indexed with Thomson Reuters Science Citation Index Expanded."
Just when we were preparing the May-June issue (Vol 61, Issue 3) of 2016, we received the official mail from Thomson Reuters with the news that "Indian Journal of Dermatology has been selected for coverage in Thomson Reuter's products and services. This publication will be indexed and abstracted in:
- Science Citation Index Expanded (also known as SciSearch®)
- Journal Citation Reports/Science Edition".
This indexing came with a retrospective effect beginning with Vol 59, Issue 1, of 2014.
This certainly is a dream came true for all of us here who are closely attached with this heritage journal on a daily basis.
Indian Journal of Dermatology's (IJD) uniqueness lays in being a journal on the global platform where a scientific journal (not only in dermatology but also in the entire field of biomedical journals) published by a state branch of a society could not only regularly publish for such a long time but also continue to be an influential, indexed journal.
If we consider the chequered history of the journal, we may realize the huge significance of this achievement.
In the 60s of the last century, IJD was the first indexed dermatology journal in the whole of Asia. The journal got indexed with the Index Medicus (Vol. 8, No. 1, October-December 1962). [1]
It got de-indexed in 1990 for various reasons. It failed in two subsequent attempts to get reindexed in the 90s. Finally, IJD became available with PubMed Central on October 30, 2009, with effect from issues of 2008. [2]
SCIe indexing was the next level huge milestone that this heritage journal has just touched.
After the announcement of this accomplishment, the article submission to the JoW system has experienced an expected and significant upsurge in the last few weeks. To properly evaluate the manuscripts, we have invited application for new reviewers from the database of all users of the journal site.
From more than a thousand eager applicants, we have added a few dozens of new reviewers to the system. Now, our list of reviewers reflects a healthy and balanced distribution from almost all corners of the globe.
I am glad to share that the current SCImago metrics which are extremely promising (http://www.scimagojr.com/journal_img.php?id=24835) [Figure 1].
In 2012, we were able to register the acronym of Indian Journal of Dermatology (IJD). [3]
After that, it became IJD®.
In 2015, we have been able to finalize the registration process of the logo of IJD® as our official trademark. Registration of Trade Mark No. is 2329639.
Henceforth, the logo will be displayed as shown in [Figure 2].
These ongoing successive achievements were possible only because of thousands of our avid readers, authors, and well-wishers all over the world; highly erudite, focused, and committed editorial board members; strict yet sensitive and responsive reviewers; principled and proficient publishers; distinguished members of the editorial advisory board; and extremely supportive executive committee of IADVL, West Bengal State Branch, and Asian Academy of Dermatology and Venereology.
We must gratefully remember the firm resolve, persistence, tenacity, devotion, determination, and grit of many foot soldiers and lieutenants in the team IJD over the last couple of decades.
I sincerely acknowledge the contribution of each one of them.
In 2000 we launched our website www.e-ijd.org, that was the first website of any Dermatology Journal in Asia.
In 2012 we launched the Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/DermatolJ/?fref=ts) and Facebook group(https://www.facebook.com/groups/indjerdermatology/) which ultimately became one of the largest Dermatology groups in the whole world.
Now, Indian Journal of Dermatology has plunged into the world of Twitter by creating a Twitter account.
Please follow IJD's new Twitter account(@DermatolJ) and retweet.
We hope to receive the help and cooperation of our readers, reviewers, advisors, and industrial partners as before to take this heritage journal from India to the next level of excellence.
As was written in the Editor's epistle signed by the then Editor Sandipan Dhar and Executive Editors Koushik Lahiri and Saumya Panda in 2009 and was quoted in the editorial on the occasion of IJD being reindexed in PubMed, I may take the liberty of quoting these lines "… at this moment of pride and joy, the Editorial team feels redeemed for being able to stand true to the ideals and vision of the founding fathers of the journal, able to nurture and nourish it like a delicate plant that has its roots firmly on the ground beneath, yet has an insatiable urge to reach out to the sky, to the wide world far beyond immediate environs. This great moment asks all of us in the Editorial team to be humble and introspective, humble in the realization that this historic opportunity demands us to take the journal to ever greater heights, introspect all the time as to how much further we need to carry forward our unfinished task…." However sweeping the changes might seem, our basic objective remains the same: "to be devoted to the advancement of the subject" i.e., dermatology. [2]
I pay my respect to all my predecessors for whom we are able to enjoy this bright and beautiful day in our glorious history.
Long live the Indian Journal of Dermatology (IJD® ).
